Ract Capture

Ract reads your sales from your own signed-in Whatnot tab. This is the piece that does that. It watches — it never signs in for you, never sees your password, and never sends a message, places a bid or changes a listing.

Chrome on Mac or Windows. Not Safari or Firefox.

Installing it

  1. Download the file above, then unzip it. Double-click it on a Mac; right-click and choose Extract All on Windows. You get a folder called ract-capture-0.6.1.
  2. Move that folder somewhere permanent — Documents, not Downloads. Chrome loads the extension from wherever the folder is, every time it starts, so deleting or moving it later switches capture off.
  3. Open your extensions page. Click the puzzle-piece icon in Chrome’s toolbar, then Manage extensions.
  4. Turn on Developer mode — the switch at the top right of that page. It is what lets Chrome install an extension from a folder rather than from its store.
  5. Click Load unpacked and choose the folder you unzipped. Ract Capture appears in the list.
  6. Pin it. Click the puzzle-piece icon again and pin Ract Capture, so it sits in your toolbar. That is where you download a recording from if a show ever goes wrong.
  7. Go back to Ract and reload the page. An extension only attaches to pages opened after it, so the tab you were on will not see it yet.
Chrome will warn you about developer-mode extensions each time it starts. That warning means this extension did not come from the Chrome Web Store, which is true — during the beta we hand it to you directly. Nothing is wrong. You can dismiss it, and it does not affect capture.

Checking it works

Ract checks for itself rather than taking your word for it. Sign in, open Connections, and press Check capture on the Whatnot card — it tells you whether the extension answered and whether a Whatnot tab is open. If nothing answered, the usual cause is a Ract tab that was open before the install: reload it.

Updating

Download the new zip, unzip it over the old folder, then press Reload on the Ract Capture card in Manage extensions. Your shows are held by Ract, not by the extension, so nothing is lost.

What it can see

Only whatnot.com and Ract. It reads the sale events your Whatnot tab already receives and hands them to your Ract tab in the same browser. There is no server of its own and nothing is uploaded anywhere by the extension. While a show is running it also keeps a local recording in memory, so that if capture drops you can check afterwards which sales were missed — that recording never leaves your computer, and is gone when you quit Chrome. The full account of what it reads and where it goes is the privacy policy.
